NEW MMA PARKING REGULATIONS

August 28, 2005

(These are changes that affect you whether or not you are student, staff, or faculty.)

1.  Juniors and Seniors living on campus must register their vehicles with security and pay the parking fee of $50.00.  They will be issued a sticker that enables them to park behind Curtis Hall.  There is a “free” parking lot on Maine Maritime Academy’s property in Penobscot where they can park should they not want to pay $50.00.

2.  Sophomores living on campus must register their vehicles with security and pay the parking fee of $50.00.  They will be issued a sticker that enables them to park in the new lot at the end of the football field.  There is a “free” parking lot on Maine Maritime Academy’s property in Penobscot where they can park should they not want to pay $50.00.

3.  All freshmen living on campus must register their vehicles with security.  They are eligible to park for free on the Penobscot parking lot.  They are not eligible to park anywhere on campus and are encouraged not to park in town as they will be subject to the town parking ordinance.

4.  Students living in Graduate Housing must register their vehicles with security and pay the parking fee of $50.00.  They will be issued a sticker that enables them to park in the Pleasant Street parking lot.

5.  Students who have been approved to live off-campus who will be driving to campus need to register their vehicles with security.  They will be issued a sticker that enables them to park in the Pleasant Street parking lot from 0700 to 2300 Monday through Friday.  Overnight parking is not permitted.  There is no cost for day time parking.  (This does not guarantee a place to park.)

6.  Students having classes or labs on the waterfront are strongly encouraged to walk to and from class.  Parking on the Town Dock is restricted to three hours until November 1st, and there is no student parking on the MMA waterfront during class hours.

7.  Staff and faculty must have registered their vehicles with security allowing them to park in the employee areas as specified in the 2005/2006 Student Handbook.  In addition, they may park in the Pleasant Street lot during the day should other areas not be available.  If they already have a sticker, there is no need to re-register.  (This does not guarantee a place to park.)

8.  The Pleasant Street parking lot will be open from 1700 Friday until 2000 Sunday as free visitor parking. This will allow students parking on the Penobscot property to have their cars in town for the weekend, and allow visitors to Curtis Hall to park for the weekend.

9.  The school is hiring additional help to ensure that the parking regulations are enforced by the entire campus community.  Tickets will be issued to all vehicles in violation of the policy regardless of whether the car belongs to students, staff or faculty.  Failure to pay the fine will result in your vehicle being “booted”, or being towed.

10.  The town of Castine is enforcing their parking regulations starting immediately this fall with total disregard of whether you are a town person, student, staff or faculty.  Their practice has been to turn violators over to a collection agency if they are delinquent in paying the fine.
