Maine Maritime Academy Hearing Conservation Plan

The academy has identified several areas with noise levels above 85 db requiring that a Hearing Conservation Plan be implemented.  The areas include the Training Vessel State of Maine, Friendship, Pentagoet, and the Diesel lab. (see attached) The nature of work requiring the employee/student to be present in this environment for extended periods mandates the wearing of hearing protection, and an active hearing conservation plan.  Even though the time weight average in some of the areas does not require hearing protection the academy has posted the areas for hearing protection.  To this end the Academy is instituting a hearing conservation plan that’s meets or surpasses the Department of Labor standards on hearing conservation.

1.      Engineering practices will be use to lower noise levels were possible.

2.      All academy employees affected by this plan will be audiometric tested upon hiring.

3.      All academy employees affected by this plan will be audiometric re-tested annually.

4.      All academy employees/students affected by this plan will be given hearing protection to be used at all times in the affected areas.

5.      All employees affected by this plan will receive annual training on this plan.

6.      All areas affected will be posted with signs stating Hearing Protection Required.

7.      Hearing protection must be easily assessable for all employees and students.

8.      Supervisors must inform the Academy on any changes to their supervised areas where noise may become a problem. The Academy will act swiftly on the supervisors concerns.

Supervisors are responsible for the proper implementation of all facets of the hearing conservation plan. (Scheduling, training, testing, use/maintenance of the safety equipment.)

Training Those employees/students affected by this program are responsible for attending the appropriate training, participating in audiometric evaluations, the use of proper hearing protection equipment as provided, and maintaining said equipment in proper condition.

Hearing Devices When selecting hearing protection use the following formula:

Hearing device protection number minus 7 divide by 2 = actual protection.

Subtract actual protection number from the decimal level.

Any area that the noise levels are at or above the action level will fall under this plan
