Authorized Drivers

All drivers of Academy vehicles must be employees, approved volunteers, authorized sub-contractors or students at Maine Maritime Academy and must be first authorized by the Director of Safety and Security by one of the following procedures:

Employees and Volunteers

1. An Employee Vehicle Use Agreement (link to form) must be submitted to the Director of Safety and Security. He/She will forward the copy to the issuing state with a request for a current copy of the individual's driving record. Any fee required by a state to review the driving record shall be the responsibility of the applicant. One or more vehicle violations in the previous five years may be cause for denial of authorization to drive Academy vehicles.

Sub-Contractors, Students and Other Non-Employees

1. Potential drivers must be a minimum of 18 years of age.

2. A Non-Employee Vehicle Use Agreement (link to form) must be completed and submitted to the Director of Safety and Security. If the potential driver is licensed outside of the state of Maine, he/she must obtain a current driving record from the appropriate state and submit it with the Vehicle Use Agreement.

3. One or more vehicle violations in the previous five years may be cause for denial of authorization to drive Academy vehicles. The Director of Safety and Security  will evaluate such situations on a case-by-case basis with final approval.

4. Approved applicants will be required to take a brief driving test designed to ensure proficiency in maneuvering and backing a passenger van. The Director of Safety and Security or his/her designee will determine whether the applicant is qualified to carry passengers.

Under no circumstances will an applicant be permitted to drive an Academy owned vehicle without receiving authorization through one of the processes outlined above.

Once all requirements have been met, the newly approved driver will be added by Safety and Security to the official Approved Drivers List and a copy of the new list will be forwarded to Public Works. The new driver will be required to read and sign the Driver Responsibility sheet (Appendix B) indicating that he or she understands and agrees to the established requirements.

Each approved driver's record will be checked on an annual basis. An unfavorable change may result in suspension of driving privileges.
