Driver Responsibilities

Anyone driving an Academy vehicle is a representative of the institution and is expected to project a positive image of the Academy and the State of Maine. To help promote this image, the following rules are to be followed at all times:

1. The only person allowed to drive the vehicle is the one to whom the vehicle is signed out. If more than one driver is needed, all must be approved and signed out at Public Works.
2. All State and local motor vehicle rules, including speed regulations, are to be obeyed at all times. Infractions shall be the sole financial responsibility of the driver and may be cause for revocation of driving privileges.
3. Absolutely no alcoholic beverages are allowed in the vehicle. This includes unopened alcoholic beverages.
4. Seat belts are to be worn at all times by all occupants of the vehicle. It is the responsibility of the designated driver(s) to ensure that the vehicle is not put into motion until all passengers have complied with this requirement.
5. No shouting, obscene gestures or other distracting or similarly inappropriate behavior will be allowed.
6. The interior of the vehicle will be cleaned by the designated driver(s) prior to returning the vehicle to Public Works.
7. Credit cards issued shall be for the purposes of purchasing fuel and motor oil only, and may not be used to purchase fuel for personal vehicles for which mileage reimbursement is requested. Credit cards may only be used for the vehicle(s) to which they are assigned and may not be used to purchase convenience items. The designated driver(s) will be held
accountable for any unauthorized use of a credit card.
8. Each van is equipped with a cellular phone to be used for emergencies only. In the event of a disabled vehicle, drivers should contact the Department of Safety and Security at 207-326-2479 for instructions. The Safety and Security Department will obtain financial support for making repairs, if necessary, and will act as the point of contact between the disabled vehicle and other agencies where required. If financial assistance is not necessary (i.e.: the driver uses his or her own credit card for repairs), upon returning to the Academy the driver may submit a claim for reimbursement. Appropriate receipts must accompany all requests for reimbursements.
Delays resulting from inclement weather should also be reported to Safety and Security.
9. In the event of an accident while driving an Academy vehicle, it is the driver's responsibility to immediately notify the police and the Department of Safety and Security. The driver should also refer to the accident information packet located in the glove box of each vehicle and should follow the directions therein.
